Traditional pilgrimage in San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

June 24 for Saint John’s Day: this is a traditional pilgrimage, known mainly to the inhabitants of Bermeo.

Surrounding residents, especially from Bermeo, come to the foot of the chapel to get married beforehand, to keep their promises or thank the saint.

The day before, on June 23, the “Fogatas” of the night of San Juan are celebrated in Bermeo as part of the events of the Fiestas de San Juan. It starts at 7:30 pm with a parade and concerts until about 10 pm, then the traditional songs of Saint John are sung around the fire. People also burn the messages they wrote to make the bad things of the previous year disappear and attract happiness.

A floral offering is also made to the image of the Virgin Mary, immersed in the depths of the sea, under one of the natural arches that emerge at the foot of the islet.
