  15. Brahmi benefits: is brahmi oil efficient as a hair growth oil?

1. What is amla?

It is a yellow gooseberry from India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tibet and Nepal.

It is also the name of the tree that bears this fruit.

It is known under various names: amalaki, Phyllantus Emblica and Emblica Officinalis.

It is considered sacred in Asia.

Its core is used to make oil.

But one can also extract an edible juice from the fruit.

To find out more about this Asian gooseberry, read this.

2. Which amla oil is the best oil for hair growth and thickness?

Different amla oils are produced in India.

Dabur amla hair oil review.

The most known and used by the Indians is Dabur amla hair oil. Unfortunately, it contains paraffin.

Several articles deal with the precautionary approach to this substance, which is used in many cosmetic products. In particular, it would prevent the skin from breathing properly.

That said, I did not notice any particular problems with my scalp.

The other disadvantage of this brand is its rather unpleasant smell if you don't choose its jasmine version.

However, these last months I only had this oil and it keeps my hair strong and healthy. I wouldn't stop using amla oil if I only could use this one.

Emami amla plus review.

The first amla oil I used was Emami's oil, without paraffin and with henna, aloe vera and almond. It's my favourite and the one I recommend.

Unfortunately, I can no longer find it in the Indian shops in Paris, in Jagdalpur in Bastar, or on Amazon. I'll try to find it in Delhi or in another big city during my next trip. If you find some, please inform me and I'll update the article!

Emami amla plus has both a pleasant consistency thanks to almond and a sweet perfume. I used it for years and it's the one that made me addicted to amla oil.

Update of 15/07/2018: after a lot of research, I learned that Emami Amla Plus oil has been replaced by "7 oils in one", based on amla and almond as a plus, but also argan, coconut, walnut, olive, jojoba.

Navratna oil benefits for hair.

In Sri Lanka, I tested Navratna oil, based on amla, mint and vetiver. Sri Lankan women use it for both hair health and relaxing massages. I wouldn't recommend it for hair care. It is not very effective. It even made my hair dry like straw!

However, Navratna oil is great for relaxation. You can also use it in your bath, instead of essential oils. It's very relaxing.

Bio amla hair oil.

It's easy to find organic ayurvedic products. It is more expensive but 100% natural and often mixed with another ayurvedic plant like brahmi for more efficiency. The smell and texture are generally excellent.

Special case: amla Patanjali oil review.

I am back from 3 months in India and couldn't find my favourite brand, Emami. So I've decided to test Patanjali brand as I've heard both good and bad things. I wanted to make my own opinion and give it to you.

I'm extremely disappointed by Patanjali amla oil!

The reasons?

  1. I lose my hair as much as if I didn't use oil.
  2. The tips are split.
  3. My hair does not look very thick and "wild" as it does with other oils.
  4. While she's supposed to be Ayurvedic, I think she smells like paraffin.

3. Amla oils: for which color and type of hair?

Sorry for blond and red hair: Amla oils are made for dark hair.

Its components enhance the colour of black and brown hair.

Amla oil delays the arrival of grey or white hair.

Men and women can use it, whether for hair... or beard!

On the other hand, for light hair, you can use the ayurvedic oil or powder of Kachur Sugandhi, known for its beautifying effect and stimulating action of growth.

Amla is very effective on dry and damaged hair like mine was, but also apparently on frizzy hair.

4. Amla oil for beard growth.

As mentioned above, men can use amla oil for their beard.

Nevertheless, some of my Indian friends use mustard oil instead, which would also delay the arrival of white hairs and gray hair while fortifying the hair.

For having tested this oil on my hair, its smell is much more masculine and its consistency is different, which makes it more suitable for male hair than female hair.

5. How to apply amla oil on hair for growth and thickness?

It is extremely simple! I use it as an overnight hair mask.

  1. Pour the amla oil into the palm of your hands.
  2. Apply all over the hair by massaging.
  3. Emphasize roots and tips.
  4. Leave it on overnight.
  5. The next day, do your usual shampoo.
  6. Repeat the operation twice a week.

In India, people keep the amla oil on their hair all day long. That's why they're so brilliant.

6. How to use amla powder for hair growth?

You can mix amla powder with other Ayurvedic powders to prepare a densifying mask for your hair.

This mask is indicated against hair loss and the appearance of grey and white hair.

  1. Put 5 grams of amla powder, 5 grams of nagarmotha powder and 5 grams of bhringaraj powder into a bowl.
  2. Add about 45ml of mineral water, depending on the desired consistency.
  3. Add a few drops of an essential oil that you like to smell (the grapefruit blends well with this recipe).
  4. Apply after shampooing.
  5. Massage the scalp with a little water.
  6. Leave for 15-20 minutes.
  7. Rinse with clean water.

For blond hair, only replace amla with Sugandhi kachur powder (link before the title n°4) or by clicking here.

7. Amla oil benefits for hair. Is amla efficient against hair fall and greying?

With Amla, my hair grows much faster, they are healthier and always brown at 44!

Before, my roots tended to be brittle, hence some unsightly loops at the top of the skull...

I couldn't have them very long, otherwise the tips were very quickly split.

The floor of my apartment was often covered with hair.

Since my amla oil masks, my roots are healthy.

My tips are no longer split at all and I don't need to have them cut very often.

At 44 years of age, I never colour and rarely discover a lost white hair (genetic, you might say. Maybe... My parents have a lot of advantages in that regard. But maybe not... My two sisters had their first white hair well before 40 years of age, and I've been using shampoos with henna for years, and now amla).

My hair tends to wiggle slightly, which I love and which gives it a very vital look, rather than looking dull and without volume when it was too long before.

And I don't spend my time sucking hair off the floor anymore!

When I happen to be out of stock, I quickly see the difference.

8. Amla oil before and after.

The two top photos were taken in 2012, at the age of 39.

The next two photos were taken at my birthday party in India in 2015, at the age of 42.

Amla oil before and after pics

9. Should you use Navratna oil for hair?

I also used Himani's Navratna oil, which was not a complete success and seems more suitable for relaxing massages.

My roots have tended to be brittle again, and my tips a little split...

10. Is amla efficient against dandruff?

A priori, not amla oil alone.

But most ayurvedic products combine other plants with amla, and are effective against dandruff (khadi amla, Bhringaraja Amalaki).

For example, you can test the recipe for the amla/bhringaraj/nagarmotha mask shown above.

Alternatively, you can use the recommended products listed below.

11. What is the secret of the Indian tribes for their hair?

In Bastar district (Chhattisgarh state), the tribes use 100% natural oil made from Mahua flower.

Double problem: it doesn't smell very good, and I only saw this oil there, sold by the people of the tribes who make it themselves!

It's contained in large metal cans and is poured into a small plastic or another bottle.

It is used only by tribal people, because of the smell that scents others.

Mahua oil is however very effective.

I was able to test it on one hand, which remained incredibly soft two days later!

Don't expect a nice refined oil.

The pure mahua oil of the tribes looks more like melted butter than a liquid oil.

So you must visit my favorite region of India, Bastar, if you want to test this oil!

During my next trip to Central and Northern India, I'll try it and tell you how it worked.

Update of the 25th of April: Mahua oil is actually used only for the skin, not for hair.

12. The products I recommend... or not.

Do not hesitate to test Emami Amla Plus oil if you find it, or even Dabur amla hair oil if you are not afraid of paraffin (the two brands most used by Indian women).

Choose scented versions over jasmine, especially for the Dabur brand, whose natural smell is rather unpleasant.

However, even if the price is higher, I would recommend 100% organic ayurvedic products like Khadi Amla or Bhringamalakadi Taila Oil BIO.

As for Navratna oil, the first one I used, seems to me much better than that of the Himani brand, in any case for the relaxing aspect.

However, I prefer the Tiger balm for pain, aches and pains or headaches (also effective against insect bites, etc.).

13. How to use the complete amla benefits for hair and improving your health?

Amla can be used for beard and hair care, both in oil and powder. Personnally, I prefer the oil that nourishes better my dry hair. This is what I recommend you for the best results.

Amla powder benefits for skin. How to prepare a facial mask with amla.

Amla benefits are not only for hair.

You can also prepare an exfoliating and antioxidant facial treatment with amla powder:

  1. Apply the mixture on the face.
  2. Keep it for 10-30 minutes.
  3. Rinse.

What are Amla juice benefits?

Many of my Indian friends take amla juice for hair regrowth and skin, regulating their weight and taking care of their health.

But don't put amla juice on hair. It's not the normal use and it's certainly totally useless.

In November 2015, I drank this juice every morning to fight my allergy to dust, because amla strengthens the immune defenses.

Be aware that amla juice and fruits are very sour, so you should dilute it a lot.

Read the comment of Vijay and Srikumaran in the next section below as they talk about amla power for health and especially organes.

Amla fruit: what are the Indian gooseberry benefits?

During my trip in early 2018, a high school principal gave me dried amla fruit from the school's huge organic garden.

Some Indians usually eat a few berries in the morning on an empty stomach.

They say they feel more energetic and of course, it improves their health, skin and hair.

Some of them mix it with some other fruit juices.

You can buy them dried or in capsules.

14. What my readers say about amla.

15. Brahmi benefits: is brahmi oil efficient as a hair growth oil?

Since many of you are wondering about the benefits of Brahmi oil, I asked my Indian friends about its use and effects.

It appears that Brahmi oil is never used alone for hair, unlike amla oil.

They all recommended me to use ayurvedic oils mixing amla and brahmi in particular.

The secret of Indian women, amla, prevents greying and falling hair.

It makes hair stronger, darker and grow faster.

The amla oils are my favourite for my hair as it nourishes it

The other products: I also use amla shampoo.
